Over €400,000 Spent On Garda's New Roadside Drug-testing Kits

The initial cost of implementing new roadside drug testing kits has amounted to over €400,000.

The figures showed that 157 Draeger Drugtest 5000 devices at a cost of €615 each, as well as 21,200 disposable testers, into which motorists pass saliva, costing €15 each.According to a MBRS spokeswoman,the kits were purchased using the grant money the Bureau receives from the Department of Transport,Tourism,and Sport.

She added:"The device has gone through an open EU competitive tender process and comprehensive testing for performance in its testing for cannabis, cocaine, benzodiazepines and opiates."It was the device with the highest score of the devices assessed under the competitive tender process."
